Sample book of cigar box labels, ca. 1880-1900.

This volume served as a salesman's sample book of chromolithographed cigar box labels and cigar bands produced by F. Heppenheimer's Sons and Heppenheimer and Maurer. It contains approximately 271 prints, some of which are embossed. Most items are 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches. Each item bears a stock number. Designs depict mostly women and some men in military costume, but some show such local scenes as railway stations and barrooms. Some items portray ships, and one contains a view of the Suez Canal.

Frederick Ludwig Heppenheimer was a lithographer active in New York City between 1851 and his death in 1876. From 1872 to 1876, he partnered with lithographer Louis Maurer in the firm Heppenheimer and Maurer. Apparently, after Heppenheimer's death, his sons continued his business, located on the corner of Pearl and William Streets in New York City....
